UK Minister for Syrian Refugees visits Za’atari Refugee Camp

Thursday 8 October 2015

The UK’s new Minister for Syrian Refugees has visited Save the Children and UNICEF’s Child Family Centre in Za’atari Refugee camp on Wednesday.

Richard Harrington met with a group of Syrian children attending informal education classes at the centre, engaging with teachers and staff who briefed him on the situation for Syrian refugee children and their families both inside Za’atari camp and more broadly in Jordan.

The visit came as a follow-up to the recent UK government’s announcement to accept a further 20,000 of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees from camps set up for those fleeing violence at home.

Mr Harrington, who was appointed as the Minister for Syrian Refugees in September to co-ordinate the resettlement operation, said:

“The work that is being done here is vital for Syrian children and their families, and the UK government is committed to continue its support to the Syrian refugees who have fled the Syrian conflict.”
